A travel to Tyatya

 01 September 2007

12:00 – My friends have just arrived to the Homutovo terminal of the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk airport. Accommodation in the local airline hotel.

02 September

13:00 – 15:00 – Flight time from Homutovo to Kunashir airport Mendeleevo. A shuttle traffic to the local tourists lodge in the center of the Yuzhno-Kurilsk just 20 miles away. Delicious dinner in the local sea-food restaurant  “Ocean”

03 September

Our aim is volcano Tyatya that is situated in the National Park “ Kurilsky ”  just 50 miles on the North from Yuzhno-Kurilsk or Yu-K as it usually known between natives. We've been driving first 10 miles by an off-road jeep and have to overcome remainder on foot. Our way will go on the surf line sand along the East coast while sea water is going out and at the volcano foot we run into thick bamboo bushes.

04 September

17:00 – 3 hours tracking had been accomplished and we reached the first thermals. About 20 feet length and 10 feet width a concrete bath with 50-55 degrees water temperature. If you are exhausted from hot you can plunge into the Pacific Ocean waves only 15 feet away in order to refresh yourself. The rest day time is just swimming.

05 September

There are quite dark nights here in case when the sky blotted by clouds out. And the sunset time is really short.  Only your ears can help you to understand what is going on around the tent in the middle of the night. It is usually the surf line sounds but sometimes something else. And only after wake-up in the morning and glancing around on the sand just 3 feet away you can find out a reason of it – grey bears footprints near the bonfire. This is already the National Park region. The Kuril Islands are not the same as Africa and no need to walk here side by side with heavy armed rangers but you have to be careful. The number of the grey bears on the island surpasses people number and they want to get respect by their rights.

8:00      The nights rain had let up and the morning mist disappeared. Today our way is 10 miles on the old road. The top layer of the ground have been washing out for many years and it looks like a deep ravine with steep slopes that covered with thick bamboo and Sakhalin fur trees. A lot of creeks without any bridges, one steep mountain pass. A 66 pounds backpack has started disappointed me, my fast friends went ahead, I'm limping alone and thinking about bears. At last the parks mark had showed us the right direction and we reached a wonderful ocean sand beach with a stunning view at the volcano.

06 September

Tracking on the sand and pebbles again. The weather is quite good and the sun is shining the whole day. We've waded through the river Tyatya and it is only 4 miles are left till the pass to Volcano summit. We made a camp on a small beach under the slope of a low mound with a small brook. A fantastic sunset and the night with sky studded by stars.

07 September

Typhoon is coming. That is what we found out from the park rangers while they were checking our permission cards yesterday. But nothing doing, today we must climb the volcano. It’s windy and raining but we wake up at 7 AM and set off. 4 miles along the coast, 4 miles through bamboo and 4 miles of the gradual ascent to the main crater. And after 8 hours walking we finally reached the Tyatya caldera 1800 meters above the sea level.

08 September

Typhoon day. Strong wind, pouring rain, I've never seen such a high wave in my life before. It seems that we are ready to take off with our tent to Japan. It's impossible even go out, such a strong wind hit us.

09-12 September –The storm had blown itself out and we were able to make a backtrack.

13 September

14:00 - Having booked the tickets in advance we've just embarked on the Ocean Liner " Marina C'vetaeva ". 24 hours of an amazing cruise across Okhotsk sea is waiting us.

14 September

Just landed on the pierce of the beautiful and comfy Sakhalin city Korsakov, 20 miles away from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. We are taking off tomorrow to Moscow. Our voyage is over.
